Heat Pump Not Heating

When your heat pump runs but blows cool or lukewarm air on a chilly morning, we diagnose and repair it at homes across Florida. Most no-heat calls come down to a stuck reversing valve, a failed defrost control, low refrigerant charge, or a thermostat calling for the wrong mode. Before you call, check that the thermostat is set to heat, replace the batteries, look for a tripped breaker, and clear leaves or mulch away from the outdoor unit. Then give us a ring and we will come look.

What This Repair Involves

A heat pump heats by running in reverse, so no-heat problems usually sit in the parts that manage that switch. We arrive, confirm what the thermostat is actually sending, then work outside at the unit while it tries to change modes. We measure temperature split at the supply and return, check pressures, and watch the defrost cycle behave or fail. That tells us whether we are dealing with a control board, a valve, a coil issue, or a charge problem, and we explain what we found before any work starts.

What We Check And Replace

Common finds on our trucks include failed reversing valve solenoids, defrost boards and sensors that never let the unit come out of defrost, bad contactors, weak capacitors, and outdoor coils packed with salt residue and dirt. On older island properties, corrosion on terminals and refrigerant line connections shows up constantly. We also check for auxiliary heat strips that quit, which is why some homes feel fine in mild weather and cold on the first real front. Parts get replaced, connections get cleaned, and charge gets verified.

How We Decide Repair Is The Right Call

We look at what failed, how much of the system it affects, and how much runtime the unit already has behind it. A defrost board or contactor on a healthy heat pump is a straightforward repair worth doing. A leaking coil on a heavily corroded unit that also short cycles in cooling season is a different conversation, and we will say so plainly. Our job is to give you the condition of the equipment and the options, then let you decide without any pressure from us.

Heat Pump Not Heating — quick answers

Why does my heat pump blow cool air when set to heat?

Usually the reversing valve is not switching, the unit is stuck in a defrost cycle, or refrigerant charge is low. It can also be a thermostat wired or set wrong. We test all of those on site.

Is it normal for the outdoor unit to steam in heating mode?

Yes. Heat pumps run a defrost cycle that melts frost off the outdoor coil, and steam or water is expected. If it steams constantly and never returns to heating, the defrost control needs attention.

My emergency heat works but regular heat does not. What now?

That points at the heat pump side rather than the electric heat strips, often a reversing valve, defrost board, or charge issue. Run emergency heat sparingly for comfort and call us to diagnose the rest.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, ice on the lineset, a humming outdoor unit. That detail helps us load the right parts before we drive out.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

We check the thermostat, the air handler, the condenser and the electrical side, then measure what the system is actually doing. You get a plain explanation of the fault and the repair options before we start.

  3. Step 3

    We repair and verify

Once the repair is done we run the system and confirm temperature split, drainage and airflow at the vents. If a part is on order, we tell you the timeline instead of leaving you guessing.

Why homeowners call us

  • We plan for salt airCoastal humidity and salt eat coils, contactors and cabinet screws. We look for corrosion during every visit and treat it as part of the diagnosis, not an afterthought, so a repaired system does not fail again in the same spot.
  • Built for constant runtimeFlorida systems run most of the year, so bearings, capacitors and drain lines wear faster than the manual suggests. We size repairs around that reality and point out the components likely to be next in line.
  • Old houses and new onesIsland properties often hide ductwork in tight, damp spaces, while tract homes tend to have short, undersized returns. We have worked both and adjust the approach rather than forcing one standard fix.
  • Clear talk, no upsell theatreWe tell you what failed, what it takes to fix it, and whether repair or replacement makes more sense for the age of the equipment. If a repair will hold, we say so and get on with it.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
