What the job involves
A capacitor gives the motor the shove it needs to start and helps it keep running. When it weakens, the motor draws too much current, overheats and trips out. We shut off power at the disconnect, discharge the capacitor safely, confirm the reading against the rating on the case, and fit a matching replacement. If the motor itself has failed bearings or a burned winding, we swap the motor and blade assembly, set the correct rotation, and test amp draw before we leave.
What we check and install
We test capacitor microfarads, motor windings, the contactor, the wiring at the terminals and the amp draw under load. On coastal homes we also look at what salt air has done to the terminals and the motor housing, because corroded connections cook capacitors early. Replacement parts are matched to horsepower, voltage, rotation and frame. We clean the condenser coil while the top is off, since a blocked coil is what pushed the old motor past its limits in the first place.
How we decide it is the right call
A weak capacitor and a dying fan motor look similar from the thermostat, so we measure rather than guess. If the capacitor reads out of range and the motor spins freely with good windings, the capacitor alone fixes it. If the shaft is stiff, the housing is scorched or the amp draw stays high on a fresh capacitor, the motor is done. Why did my capacitor fail after only a few years?
Constant runtime in Florida heat, plus salt air corroding terminals, shortens capacitor life. A dirty coil or a struggling motor also pushes the capacitor harder. We check those causes so the new part is not fighting the same conditions.
Can I just replace the capacitor myself?
We do not recommend it. Capacitors store high voltage after the power is off and can discharge into you. Sizing also has to match the motor exactly. Call us and we will handle the testing and the swap.
Should I replace the fan motor or the whole outdoor unit?
It depends on the age of the system, the condition of the coil and cabinet, and whether the compressor is healthy. If corrosion has eaten the cabinet and coil, we will tell you honestly before you spend on a motor.
