Defrost Cycle Problems

We repair heat pump defrost cycle problems in homes across Florida, from the outdoor coil icing over to a defrost board that never tells the system to melt it. You need us when the outdoor unit is wrapped in frost or ice on a cool morning, when the heat feels weak, or when the unit runs and runs without ever cycling out of defrost. Turn the system to fan only or off so the ice can melt, then call us and describe what you saw.

What the job involves

A heat pump in heating mode pulls warmth out of outdoor air, so the outdoor coil runs colder than the air around it and picks up frost. The defrost cycle reverses that briefly and clears it. When the cycle misfires, we trace the sequence end to end: what tells the board to start defrost, what tells it to stop, and whether the reversing valve actually shifts. That means live readings while the system runs, not guesses from a symptom list.

What we check

We check the defrost thermostat or sensor clipped to the coil, the defrost control board and its timing, the reversing valve solenoid, and the outdoor fan that should stop during defrost. Coastal air is hard on all of it, so we look closely at corroded sensor clips, green terminals and rusted-through coil fins. We also confirm refrigerant charge and airflow, because a starved coil ices up no matter how well the defrost logic works. Drainage under the unit gets a look too.

How we decide it is the right call

If the outdoor coil ices repeatedly, if the indoor air turns lukewarm on cool days, or if the unit sits in defrost far longer than it should, the defrost circuit is the place to start. We separate that from a low charge, a dirty filter or a blocked outdoor unit first, since those cause the same frost. Constant runtime in Florida wears these parts early, so we tell you plainly which piece is failing and which is still fine.

Defrost Cycle Problems — quick answers

Is frost on my outdoor unit always a problem?

No. A light coat of frost in heating mode is normal, and the defrost cycle should clear it within minutes. Thick ice, ice that stays for hours, or ice that returns immediately means something in the circuit needs attention.

Can I pour water on the ice to melt it?

Skip it. Water can refreeze in the coil fins and around the fan blade. Switch the system off or to fan only, let the ice melt on its own, and call us before running heat again.

Why does the unit steam during defrost?

That steam is melted frost coming off a warm coil, and it is normal. What is not normal is steam with no drop in ice, or a unit that steams for long stretches without returning to heating.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, ice on the lineset, a humming outdoor unit. That detail helps us load the right parts before we drive out.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

We check the thermostat, the air handler, the condenser and the electrical side, then measure what the system is actually doing. You get a plain explanation of the fault and the repair options before we start.

  3. Step 3

    We repair and verify

Once the repair is done we run the system and confirm temperature split, drainage and airflow at the vents. If a part is on order, we tell you the timeline instead of leaving you guessing.

Why homeowners call us

  • We plan for salt airCoastal humidity and salt eat coils, contactors and cabinet screws. We look for corrosion during every visit and treat it as part of the diagnosis, not an afterthought, so a repaired system does not fail again in the same spot.
  • Built for constant runtimeFlorida systems run most of the year, so bearings, capacitors and drain lines wear faster than the manual suggests. We size repairs around that reality and point out the components likely to be next in line.
  • Old houses and new onesIsland properties often hide ductwork in tight, damp spaces, while tract homes tend to have short, undersized returns. We have worked both and adjust the approach rather than forcing one standard fix.
  • Clear talk, no upsell theatreWe tell you what failed, what it takes to fix it, and whether repair or replacement makes more sense for the age of the equipment. If a repair will hold, we say so and get on with it.

  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
