Dual-Fuel System Repair

We repair dual-fuel systems, meaning the heat pump and gas furnace pairing that switches between the two depending on outdoor temperature. Homeowners call us when the furnace fires on a mild day, when the heat pump runs and the house never warms, or when the changeover happens at the wrong point and the bill jumps. If you smell gas, leave the building first, call 911 or your gas utility, then call us. Otherwise check the thermostat settings and batteries, then book a visit and we will trace the control side.

What a dual-fuel repair actually involves

A dual-fuel system has two heat sources and one brain deciding which one runs. Most of the faults we find live in that decision, not in the equipment. We test the outdoor sensor, the thermostat programming, the changeover setpoint and the wiring between the air handler board and the furnace. Then we confirm the heat pump still produces heat on its own and that the furnace stages and cycles correctly. Coastal properties across the region add corrosion at terminals and contactors, which mimics a control fault and gets misdiagnosed often.

What we check on the visit

We start at the thermostat because that is where the balance point is set, and a wrong number there sends the furnace on for no reason. From there we read refrigerant performance, defrost operation, reversing valve function and the outdoor coil condition. On the gas side we inspect the burners, flame sensing, venting and the safety switches. We also look at filters and duct restriction, since constant runtime in Florida humidity loads a system harder than the calendar suggests. You get the findings in plain language before anything is replaced.

How we decide dual-fuel repair is the right call

If the heat pump alone can carry the house on a normal cool night and the furnace is only meant to cover the cold snaps, then a control or sensor repair usually fixes the complaint. If the compressor is failing, the coil is eaten through by salt air, or the furnace heat exchanger is compromised, we say so and talk through replacement of that half instead of patching around it. Sometimes the honest answer is that the two halves were never commissioned to work together, and we correct the setup.

Dual-Fuel System Repair — quick answers

Why does my furnace run when it is not that cold outside?

The changeover setpoint is likely set too high, or the outdoor sensor is reading wrong. Both are common after a thermostat swap. We verify the sensor, correct the balance point and confirm the heat pump carries mild weather on its own.

Can you repair just the heat pump side and leave the furnace?

Yes. The two halves are separate equipment sharing controls, so we repair or replace one without touching the other, provided the remaining half is sound and the control wiring supports the pairing.

Does salt air affect a dual-fuel system more than a standard one?

The outdoor heat pump section takes the damage, especially coils, contactors and wiring terminals. Corroded connections cause intermittent changeover faults. We clean, treat and replace affected parts and inspect the whole control path while we are there.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, ice on the lineset, a humming outdoor unit. That detail helps us load the right parts before we drive out.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

We check the thermostat, the air handler, the condenser and the electrical side, then measure what the system is actually doing. You get a plain explanation of the fault and the repair options before we start.

  3. Step 3

    We repair and verify

Once the repair is done we run the system and confirm temperature split, drainage and airflow at the vents. If a part is on order, we tell you the timeline instead of leaving you guessing.

Why homeowners call us

  • We plan for salt airCoastal humidity and salt eat coils, contactors and cabinet screws. We look for corrosion during every visit and treat it as part of the diagnosis, not an afterthought, so a repaired system does not fail again in the same spot.
  • Built for constant runtimeFlorida systems run most of the year, so bearings, capacitors and drain lines wear faster than the manual suggests. We size repairs around that reality and point out the components likely to be next in line.
  • Old houses and new onesIsland properties often hide ductwork in tight, damp spaces, while tract homes tend to have short, undersized returns. We have worked both and adjust the approach rather than forcing one standard fix.
  • Clear talk, no upsell theatreWe tell you what failed, what it takes to fix it, and whether repair or replacement makes more sense for the age of the equipment. If a repair will hold, we say so and get on with it.
