What Constant Runtime Actually Means
A heat pump in cold weather is supposed to run long cycles. It pulls heat out of outdoor air, and the colder that air gets, the less heat there is to move, so the unit stays on longer to keep up. Long runtime by itself is not a fault. What matters is whether the house is holding temperature. If your thermostat says 70 and the rooms feel like 70, the system is working hard and winning. If the thermostat has been calling for heat for hours and the reading keeps drifting down, something is limiting capacity and it is worth a look.
Airflow Restrictions, The Cheapest Cause First
Most nonstop-runtime calls we take across the region start with airflow. A loaded filter, closed or blocked vents, furniture over a return, or a collapsed section of flex duct all starve the indoor coil. The system runs, moves a trickle of air, and never satisfies the thermostat. Older island homes with original ductwork and mainland tract homes with long runs to back bedrooms both show this. Check the filter first, then walk the house and confirm supply and return vents are open and clear. If airflow is the issue, correcting it often ends the problem the same day with nothing else touched.
Controls, Defrost And Auxiliary Heat
The second family is controls. A thermostat set to emergency heat, a bad thermostat sensor, low batteries, or a wiring fault can leave the system calling for heat around the clock. Heat pumps also run a defrost cycle to clear frost off the outdoor coil, and when the defrost board or sensor fails, the coil ices over and capacity drops off hard. You may see a solid block of ice on the outdoor unit. Do not chip at it or pour anything on it. That is a diagnostic call, and the fix is usually a control component rather than the whole system.
Refrigerant Charge And Compressor Capacity
The third family is the refrigerant circuit, and this is where our coastal work shows up. Salt air eats copper line sets, coil fins and cabinet fasteners, and a slow leak from corrosion means the system moves less heat every season until it cannot keep up at all. A worn compressor or a failing reversing valve does the same thing. Symptoms overlap with airflow problems, which is why guessing here wastes money. Refrigerant work is not a homeowner job under any circumstances. If your unit is a decade old, sits near the water, and runs constantly, a leak search is usually the right next step.
What You Can Safely Check, And What We Do Differently
Safe homeowner checks are short. Replace the filter, confirm the thermostat is set to heat rather than emergency heat and has fresh batteries, look for a tripped breaker, clear leaves and debris away from the outdoor unit, and open every supply and return vent. Stop there. When we arrive for air conditioning repair or heating repair on a heat pump, we measure temperature split across the indoor coil, check static pressure, read refrigerant pressures and superheat, verify the defrost sequence, and inspect the line set and coil for corrosion damage.
